Handmade Style Christmas Ornaments at Target

I saw these super-cute crafty style Christmas ornaments at Target.

There are tons to choose from at really good prices.

Which makes me happy and sad.

I'm happy I could go get some nice new Christmas things...

But I'm a bit sad that handmade style has been co-opted and massed produced.

It would take a real person quite a while to make one of these little felt tree ornaments.

They're $3. each at Target.

So, would I sit here sewing for hours?

Or go for the made in China version?

I guess my solution will be somewhere in the middle.

I'll probably buy a few new cute things.

And I'll also spend hours sewing...

Even though some of the ornaments are really cute, I think handmade is still the way to go...

Merry making!

Bright Colors on a Dark Day

It's dark and grey here in Houston this morning.  We're all feeling pretty dark and grey.  Here's an antidote to all that darkness...

This house tour is not a solution for world peace but it will cheer you right up.

The Trouble is You Think You Have Time

I was watching the TV show "American Pickers" last night and I've been thinking about STUFF.

American Pickers

I like the two guys on the show and they really find some amazing stuff.  It's frustrating watching sometimes because they go for all the 'man' stuff and I can see where I'd be looking - at the more interesting 'woman' stuff!

american pickers

What strikes me most about the show though is that the collection owners are almost all older men who mainly don't want to part with their treasures.  Lots of times they'll hold out for a higher price, things just aren't for sale, etc..

What are you thinking there guys?

american pickers

You can't take it with you.

I've been to enough estate sales to know this and you have too.

Let it go.

I'm thinking about my own 'stuff' and how I need to be careful all the time to edit and not collect.

I don't want to live in a bare house but I don't want my children to have to deal with a bunch of junk either...

I'm constantly trying to clean, organize and keep only what we need or love...

Watching the show last night I was looking around the whole time at what needs to go.

The view from my couch, including dog and baby gear.

the life changing magic of tidying up

This is my decluttering bible.  Except for the part about the folding clothes.  I just can't get the folding...

Time to get busy!

Jung Typology Test

jung typology test

This personality test is easy and fun.  Kind of like the Cosmo Quiz of psychology (do they still have those, I wonder?)  You answer 64 questions and find out which of the 16 personality types you are.

I'm an INFJ which is the most rare of the personality types and the ones who feel like they never fit in anywhere.  Good to know.

You can also find famous people who are your personality type...

I was feeling pretty good about fellow INFJs Noam Chomsky and Mahatma Gandhi but then it went downhill...

Hitler and Osama?  Geez...

But then I was redeemed by Michelle Pfeiffer,

Ross from Friends,

and George, my favorite Beatle!

If you want to find out more about the test and spoil the fun, you can read more about it here.

xoxoMary, INFJ

My Top 5 Favorite Pins on Pinterest - Today

I LOVE Pinterest and scroll around it in the mornings when I'm having my coffee.  So many great ideas!  Here are some pins I'm really liking (and using the ideas from) today -

clean cookie sheets

How to clean yucky cookie sheets is here.  I thought it wouldn't work on my non-stick sheet but it's in the kitchen working right now.  I do need to scrub it a bit with a nylon scrubber but it's definitely going to look 'good as new'.

The cookie sheet was all gunked up with sticky brownish stuff.  Apparently this is from cooking spray which you're never supposed to use on non-stick surfaces and everyone but me already knew this...

stuffed mushrooms

My husband went grocery shopping hungry and came home with way too many mushrooms so I'm going to make this stuffed mushroom recipe tonight.  I love Pinterest for recipes!

beautiful kitchen

I love a classic black and white floor.  My kitchen might need this...

sugar skull cat

I'm not sure if this is cute or crazy but I could paint Day of the Dead sugar skull patterns on figurines from thrift stores all day long...

tracy porter bedding

I love these Tracy Porter throw cushions and they're at Macy's on sale right now...

Are you a Pinterest addict like me?

Happy pinning!

La Mer Update and Some Drug Store Product Fails

Here's a perfect example of why I need to 'journal' the things I've learned so I don't keep making the same mistakes...

la mer

I've been using the La Mer soft cream for a few years.  Don't scoff until you hear me out.  I do not in any way expect it to make me look younger.  No 'reducing the appearance of fine lines' or any of that silliness.  All I'm going for is a comforting level of moisturizing that makes my skin maybe look not like an alligator.  That's it.

La Mer is perfect for my skin.  I love it.  So, why then don't I have any right now?  Because I'm of Scottish ancestry, that's why.  We're known to be 'frugal'.   The price kind of slays me.

So, as I have done in the past, I set out to find a cheaper alternative...

mad hippie

I wanted to love the Mad Hippie products just for the name.  I just didn't though.  Using any of it even once made my skin irritated and break out.

mature skin care

Olay gets so much hype.  Life would be wonderful if I loved their products.  They're everywhere, they're inexpensive, they promise great things.  I just don't like Olay creams.  Not hate.  Just don't like.  At all.

mature skin care

The other drug store brand I thought there might be hope for was L'Oreal so I bought this.  Glow renewal?  Yes, please.  I thought the added sunscreen was a great idea too.  I was wrong.  The sunscreen got in my eyes and felt burning for the whole day.  Fail.

mature skin care

Which brings us to yesterday's eye disaster.  I found this oil at Target and thought it would be just the thing.  Why fool around with cream when you can go all the way with oil?  I thought it would be moisturizing madness - in a good way.

No.  It did feed great to apply, as oil would on 'mature skin'.  However, a little while later I started noticing my glasses were really blurry.  You know where this is going don't you?  Well, it wasn't my glasses.  I had gotten the oil in my eyes and couldn't see.  Which is a real problem when you're at the thrift stores and need eagle eyes to find the bargains...

eagle eyes

PLUS, my mascara was all over the place.  I know some might think I could just not be an idiot and keep it away from my eyes but my eyes are kind of the point and I'm just not fussy enough to have a separate eye cream and be that careful.

runny mascara

My conclusion about this facial oil yesterday was that I did like it so I could just use it at night when it wouldn't matter about my eyes.  No.  Two red sore spots today.  Gross.

I'm embarrassed to say when I checked my cupboard there are even more creams and potions in there that I didn't like...

SO, the Scottish side of me is absolutely cringing at this 'false economy', as my husband calls it.  I definitely spent MORE and have a bunch of junk to go in the landfill to show for it.  Lesson learned.

Quelle horreur! (and off to Saks)

5 Easy Weekday Meatless Meals Using Meat Substitutes

I love to cook.  I love to make elaborate, time-consuming recipes.  Weekday nights are not the time to do this.  When our grandchildren are here we're just too busy...

I'm vegetarian and just fine with an all veggie meal. My husband is English so he's a meat and potatoes kind of guy.  Our compromise at home is usually some kind of meat substitute.  We've tried quite a few and some are definitely better than others.

Here are five of my easy vegetarian suppers - using meat substitutes that don't suck...

meatless meals

I put this one first because it's seasonal and we're obsessed with it.  You have to be sure and not overcook the turk'y so it doesn't dry out - easy peasy in the toaster oven.

You should make a green vegetable on the side.  I often don't and don't feel guilty about it either.

The gravy is heaven.  Make some mashed potatoes and don't fight - the gravy is in two packets so you know what's yours...

meatless meals

Sometimes it's fun to make a breakfasty type of supper.  These sausage patties are yummy with white gravy ( a southern thing), grits, fried potatoes, eggs...

meatless meals

Now, I know everybody's mad at Quorn.  We don't have any food allergies though and the articles I did find against it recommended that you eat real meat instead.  Hmmm.

A simple stir fry with veggies, chik'n tenders and soy sauce over rice totally works for us.

meatless meals

If you want to get fancy, and who doesn't, saute your Quorn nuggets with onions, garlic and carrots.  Add this gorgeous korma sauce.  Serve over rice with naan bread on the side and whichever Indian condiments you prefer.  In our case, that's all of them.  Mango chutney, lime pickle, coriander chutney - we're fools for condiments.

meatless meals

If you're cooking meatless, ground meat substitutes are your friend.  While I'm not in the business of fooling anyone with my cooking, you sure could with this.

Make your favorite chili recipe.  Use 'meatless grounds'.

Make tacos.  Use 'meatless grounds'.

You're welcome.

meatlss meals

Another not beef that we love is Gardein meatless meatloaf.  Your potatoes and 2 veg works perfectly here too - again yummy gravy is included.

The only thing I would warn about this one is that a 'portion' is two slices which I just can't get through.  It's kind of huge but I guess if you're a hungry farm hand (or my husband) you can finish it.

Happy Meatless Monday!
