How to (Pretend to) Stay Warm

It's cold here in Houston and our house is just not made for this weather.

The windows rattle.  The floor is freezing.  There's a gale blowing down the fireplace, even with the damper closed.

I didn't feel like tending a fire until later so I put up a curtain to try and block the breeze and then lit candles for the illusion of warmth.

Hazel Rose has the right idea on her comfy quilt.

Borrowing my granddaughter's crazy slippers.

Took pictures of new curtains I made inside.  I usually hang them outside to photograph in natural light but not today...

Stay cozy!

I Brake for Colorful India

Driving past Home Goods the other day I saw this sign and had to go in to check it out...

There were definitely lots of colorful things!

An interesting woven chair.

Bright and happy cushions galore!

Love the peacock!

I'd like some of these floor cushions for the kids - I'll wait till they're marked down though...

Wish I needed a lamp shade...

I may have to go back...

My Idea of a Meal

It gets exhausting sometimes trying to think of ideas for supper every night..

My husband is from England so he's really a meat and two veg kind of guy.

Well, in our case, a non-meat and lots of veg!

I would happily go for very simple fare...

More of "a loaf of bread a glass of wine and thou" sort of meals.

Just some gorgeous bits and pieces...

Wishing I was a French peasant...

Stay Warm. Read Books.

It's too cold and gray to do much today.  I've lit a fire in the fireplace and made my coffee.  The thing to do today is definitely read...

Just finished 'Bruce'.  To be honest, I skimmed over some of the too-many-details-about-the-music bits.  I've seen him in concert a few times and I'm interested to know what people are REALLY like.  This book delivers that - kind of.

I was really taken with Springsteen's description of depression.  To paraphrase "things can be going great and you feel like crap or things can be crap and you feel great".  Yep.

Looking for a boost of color inspiration I bought these two home decor books.  Love them both!

I know - old news.  I'm behind the times with this one but I never quite trust 'bestsellers'.  This was  interesting though and I have his other books on the way from Amazon.

You'd think that this massive door-stop of a book would at least slow down my cookbook buying obsession but I know it won't...

I always have something involving English history on the go.  Always

Getting this out to re-read today.  In April we'll be visiting a friend in Cornwall who has read the book four times (not sure how many times I've read it but I think I was just getting started at four - I'm a pretty bad geek that way) and is going to take us to see the magical sites...

Keep warm.  Read on.

Time to Shine

You know how 'they' say that you shouldn't use shiny or sparkly make-up when you get older?

Well, 'they' are totally wrong.

From my extensive research (watching people at the airport), I can conclusively say that the absolutely MOST aging thing is a dry pasty look.

Skin and/or hair - dry and pasty doesn't work if one want to look alive...

We do have to be careful with our make-up as we get older.

Here are a few products I like and recommend to banish the blahs and get shining...

We were shopping at Victoria's Secret today and I was looking for this shine mist hair spray.  I told my granddaughter (10 yrs. old) and she said, "Oh, I don't need that.".  Exactly.  You don't.  I do.

No, Olay is not just as good.

A foundation with a dewy finish is a must.

Dewy setting spray?  Cheating?  Who cares - find it and use it.  It's gorgeous!

Please don't leave the sparkly eye shadows for the kids!  Urban Decay eye shadow is so fun and up-lifting...

Love glitter nail polish!  Fairy fingers...

Shine on!

Dinner in a Flash from Trader Joe's

Last night was one of those nights when I got home too late and too hungry.  I ran into Trader Joe's and grabbed ingredients for the fastest and easiest pasta EVER!

First I cooked a bag of organic penne...

While the pasta was cooking I sauteed a package of Trader Joe's already cut-up red onions, mushrooms and asparagus.

Combine in a lasagna sized dish with a jar of this yummy sauce.

Top with your favorite vegetarian or vegan cheese...

Bake at 350 until nice and bubbly.

Done!

A Champion in San Antonio

We had a gorgeous week-end in San Antonio for our granddaughter's cheer-leading competition.

San Antonio is most famous for The Alamo and the beautiful Riverwalk that runs all through downtown.

San Antonio is very walk-able which is a real treat for Houstonians.  The weather was fantastic - in the 70's with perfect blue sky.  We walked all along the Riverwalk and had lunch outside - all with our little dog!

We stayed at the historic (and pet-friendly) Crockett Hotel.  It's right next to the Alamo and really nice.  Our room was huge and very comfortable.

The big competition was at the Alamodome.  Things really are BIG in Texas!

After two days and two awesome performances...

Go Angel Sharks!
