Summer Salsa

Remember that crazy 90's country song "God Bless Texas"?  Well, here in Texas, we're all about "God Bless Mexico".  We have AWESOME Mexican culture - not the least of which is a really good Mexican restaurant pretty much anywhere you are...

Our neighborhood favorite is El Matador.  Delicious food and close enough for us to walk - which you must if you have one of their fabulous margaritas...

Once a week, at least, we have nacho night at home.  I make all of our accompaniments from scratch - the salsa, the guacamole, etc.  Lately, I'm making fresh fruit salsas to take advantage of the in-season strawberries and mangoes.  Here's how...

I  chopped up some strawberries I got today from our Greenling local and organic veggie delivery.  Our first day so I'll let you know how it goes.  That potato looking thing is a mango.  A little yellow mango.  They're grown in Mexico and SO good.  Peel and chop... the pit in the middle is a little hard to deal with - Google it if you're not sure...

Add about 1/4 of a red onion, diced, and a handful of chopped cilantro.  You also need some jalapenos - fresh or from the jar - chopped fine - it depends how hot you like it...

Now, squeeze lots of fresh lemon or lime juice over it and add some salt and pepper.  If you've used fresh jalapenos the citrus juice will magically get rid of the jalapeno on your hands before you forget and rub your eyes with your contacts in..

Adios!

Calvert, Texas

Yesterday, on the way home from Fort Worth to Houston, we stopped in Calvert, Texas ( pop. 1,192).

Everything was closed.  It seems like some of the shops and cafes that still exist might open on week-ends.

Some of the buildings had lost their roofs and were being re-claimed by nature.

This colorful "Art of Texas" gallery seems to be abandoned now.

An arbor and seating area next to the gallery.  The artists had gone but they did leave evidence...

Dear Diana...

A prayer to Diana, Patron Saint of Age-Appropriate Fashion - after attending a Bruce Springsteen concert and seeing many people around my age in various disastrous outfits...

Dear Diana, (don't worry, we know how to pronounce your name properly)

Oh Diana, may we never forget that Brooks Brothers makes a reasonably priced white shirt for women - may we buy several.

Glorious Diana, I know thou wasn't really one for jeans but thou did not live in Texas so please help us to spend a few bucks on a good and properly fitting pair of jeans.

Oh gracious Diana, we pray for you to always let us remember that that was then and this is now.

Diana, we beseech you to never let this happen to us.

Oh great Diana, we fervently hope that the ladies of a certain age are buying those concert t-shirts as gifts for someone else.

Diana, we humbly thank you for letting us knoweth that this is a great outfit...

Dear Diana we pray to always remember that leather pants are not a good idea.  It's different for Patti, she's married to Bruce and she's on stage.

Great and wonderful Diana, may we always remember to cover our butts - literally.  Tunics are our friends.

And finally, always and forever, Diana, we thank you for black.  Amen.
