Big Rory Road

Tales from Judique, Cape Breton...

Holes have certainly been a theme this year on Big Rory Road.  Some of the relatives warned us before we came for the summer that there was a hole so big in front of the house we might not be able to stay there at all...

Being a family of worriers, speculation ran rampant for weeks as to the size of the hole and level of danger it might pose.

As often happens, it didn't turn out to be all that bad.  Since we had more pressing issues to attend to, we put a stone in it and labeled it (for safety's sake).  "Slagan" a Gaelic word meaning - a scrape, shallow hole, depression in the ground.

The next hole we had to deal with is the cellar of the old house.  Here resides the key to the whole summer vacation - THE PUMP.  This mysterious and incomprehensible machine pumps water from the well to the house.  One of the relatives (shown above, seated) has for years been the ONLY person to crack the secrets of the pump.  He has been reluctant to pass these secrets on to others.  This year, however, with the help of my sister and You-Tube, my darling husband  (shown above, in hole)  is now KING of the PUMP.  And he's not telling what he knows...

Next on the agenda was a drainage ditch that needed to be cleared away a bit.  One of the relatives who HAS to be over 80 started digging it herself.  She put quite a dent in it, but, in the end it was decided to get a guy (probably a relative) with a machine in to dig it.  We felt the results were a little larger than might be necessary but that's just us.  This digging did bring up another potential hole problem though...

Sorting through some old papers, we noticed some receipts for the rental of a metal detector.  What could someone have possibly been looking for?  Turns out one of the relatives buried some ammunition from WWI somewhere on the property.  No one is quite sure where it was buried but everyone does agree they remember it seemed too close to the house...

Oh my gosh, hilarious! The hole. What a family of worriers.

I didn't even know there was a cellar. Creepy. And ammunition too? Nice. ;)
