Happy Spring!

It's Spring in Houston - that short period of time when we work feverishly on our yards imagining all the beautiful outdoor living we're going to be doing.  Before the heat defeats us and most of our plants, that is.  Here are some of the ideas that are inspiring me this year -

I like this idea of stringing prayer flags under the umbrella.

I have a canvas gazebo but this wooden structure would be so much better.

Our fence is kind of rough looking so hiding it is definitely the way to go.

I'm going to start adding colorful scarves to the inside of the gazebo for a gypsy tent...

Lots of lights, of course.  I get mini lights at Micheal's with brown cords so they blend in with the fence.  The cords don't fool the squirrels though who eat through them as fast as I put them up.

Spanish moss is always a big part of my outdoor decorating.

I'll need a comfortable chair to relax in when all this work is done.  It's going to be in the low 80's all this week so I better get outside and get going!

All of these images are from my Ideas and Inspiration board on Pinterest.

Trayvon Martin Could Could Be Any Of Our Sons

This boy was the age of our son.  Our son can often be seen with his hood up carrying candy.  We're going to a rally and prayer vigil in Houston today.

Sewn by Hand

In the seventies we really did patch and embroider our jeans.  They were works of art.  I'm sure not many examples have survived because we wore them out.

I don't think I'd wear them anymore but I have been collecting bits to possibly make some for my shop.  I want to start with some vintage Levi's though and they're not easy to find.

OK, so I lied about that.  I just checked Etsy and found these four pairs of 501's for $15!  Now I'm really excited!  I have so many ideas of how to embellish them...

I've been thinking about embroidery.  I love to sew things by hand and always need to have a 'sitting' project since I can't just sit and do nothing.  I have to at least have my hands busy.  Here are some ideas I found on Pinterest -

All of the embroidery images are from my "Make It" board in Pinterest.  If you go there and click on the pictures you'll come to the original source (hopefully).

Can't wait to get my new old jeans!  Going to dig out my fabric vintage fabric scraps and embroidery floss..

I Speak for the Trees

Today, I got news from my daughter in New Orleans that her neighbours had cut down a huge tree that shaded both of their yards.  My daughter was heartbroken because we don't understand this type of behavior.  I Googled "Why do people cut down trees?" and the answer seemed to be blah, blah, blah...  All of which I had heard before.  I think there's more to it.

When my kids were little we lived in a little farm house in the country - over 200 years old.  The house, not the country.  The country was Canada. Which is also over 200 years old but anyway... The house was OK, the barn had seen better days but the weeping willow tree was fantastic!  It WAS the property value as far as we were concerned.  Some years later, we found out that new owners had cut down the tree.  It wasn't diseased or anything like that - they just found the falling leaves to be a bit of a nuisance.  This still bothers us.

Another daughter called yesterday for us to come and see her new apartment.  So nice with so many beautiful features.  The best?  A huge patio looking straight at a magnolia tree!  Bliss!

So, why do some humans want to cut down trees?  We lived in New Orleans before hurricane Katrina and a tree did fall on our house so don't give me that one...

My brother says that beauty just pisses some people off.

I know I'm extra-sensitive about trees in particular.  Julia Butterfly Hill is one of my heroes.  I think cutting down trees is a weird control thing.

"Lakes and levees, dams and locks, they put that river in a box
It was running wild and men must have control"  - Don Henley

Luckily, the Lorax speaks for the trees and Don Henley speaks for the rivers...

Who (or what) do we speak for?
