On The Other Hand Vintage

A few weeks ago Babylon Sisters discovered On The Other Hand, a vintage and consignment shop in New Orleans.  It's Uptown on Oak St., not one of our usual haunts, so we had never noticed it before.

Quite unassuming from the outside, we had no idea what we were in for.

This should have been a hint.

When you go in it starts out fabulous and then gets better.

All of this and the nicest owner EVER!  DO Go!

Celebrity Exhaustion

My favorite thing today is celebrity exhaustion.  I've heard about it from time to time but never gave it much thought - I assumed they were just tired.  I'm naive that way.

But then I got thinking about the latest celebrity who's exhausted.  She was rushed to the hospital at night.  This is kind of hilarious.  Who gets out of bed to go to the hospital exhausted?  Wouldn't you just stay in bed?  Hmmm.

So I googled it and found out that exhausted pretty much means drunk (or stoned).  Everything is just so much more interesting when celebrities do it.  Some celebrities are mostly famous just for being drunk!  This girl is not only exhausted -  a lot - she also FORGETS TO BREATHE!  Thankfully, she got a tatoo that says "breathe" so hopefully she's ok now.

Chances are my husband is exhausted right now.  He's on a 2 a.m. flight from Bahrian to London after a week in Saudi Arabia.  He would be tired - not drunk.  Alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia.  I think you get stoned for it - with rocks, not pot.  I might be thinking about the punishment for shoplifting though...

I have a couple of thoughts about going to the hospital if you're "exhausted".  First, you must have some serious insurance.  I have Blue Cross and I don't think they'd go for it.  Second, how drunk would you have to be to think this is a good idea?

Which naturally leads to the question "how drunk would you have to be to host a game show?".   I don't know either but you can find out here.

So, I'm joking but I'm not really.  There are a lot of people who are way too exhausted and there's nothing glamourous about it.  They don't get to go to rehab.  Look at what this woman did.

Another headline today was about a celebrity who bought this house for 21 million dollars.  I don't know her.  She's probably a nice person.  In my perfect world, however, my grandaughter's second grade teacher who inspires and enriches her life everyday deserves this kind of money.  That's just my opinion though and I'm kind of exhausted...

Happy 50th Birthday!

My husband turned 50 yesterday.  Here are the gifts he received -

A union jack teapot.  He's English - can't go wrong with this gift!

John Prine tribute album.  I had read good things about it and then listened to a bit of each song on Amazon.  Sounds promising to me but then I'll take anything that includes "Angel from Montgomery".

A "pog mo thoin" (and other languages) leather cuff from Etsy.  If you're younger than 50 and tempted to buy this to look cool,  please resist.  You should really only wear it if you mean it.  At 50 you do.

A sea kayak.  He bought this one for himself.  My son and I thought the two black ovals were parts that open up for us to sit there and my husband could paddle us around.  No.

A 1977 Tom Jones' Greatest Hits album on vinyl.  To get the party started...

Smokin' and Drinkin'

Babylon Sisters just got back from a few days in New Orleans.  Beautiful weather, great scenery, inspiring people, delicious meals - the usual reasons we love it there.  Of course, New Orleans is known as a place where having a few cocktails is accepted and encouraged but I had totally forgotten about smoking in public.  Wow!  It's amazing to me how something that used to be so common seems so bizarre now.  Scary even. We've heard so much about the negative effects of smoking that I wondered if I'd just keel off my chair dead when the table next to us lit up.  Three young-ish men chain smoking cigarettes and drinking scotch on the rocks - triples, I believe - you go Rat Pack!

So, if you laugh in the face of danger, guffaw at modern medical science (and don't have to get up for work in the morning) - here are some great items from Babylon Sister's "smokin' and drinkin'" section you might enjoy -

Keep your beer cold watching the game with these thermo-serv mugs.

Vintage Maurice USA ceramic ashtray.

Swanky bottles in a metal holder for the hard stuff.

A relic from when hotels had smoking rooms.  Now I'm worried we might get charged $300 if we light incense - does that count?

"Highballs" all around in these vintage Georges Briard tumblers!

Individual chintzware ashtrays for the ladies.

"Booze Hound" bottle - maybe a gift for a friend who needs a little hint...

Let's OVER-DO It!

A saying that I first heard in New Orleans - of course - that is very near and dear to my heart is "If a thing is worth doing, it's worth over-doing".  Anyone who's been to Mardi Gras will understand this.

Today I'm looking at some of my favorite pictures from Pinterest thinking about this totally charming and over-done kitchen.  If you check out our Babylon Sister's Etsy shop section "Kitschy Kitschy Kitchen" you'll see some great and affordable items to go way too far with decorating your kitchen - in a good way!

Love the modern twist on hanging decorative plates on a wall.  The chrome industrial light aimed at them is genius.  I bought a couple of them at Home Depot - cheap and very useful.  Here are some plates from our shop that would be just the thing to achieve this look -

Mount Clemens China astrological sign plate

handpainted vintage plate - the color of a tequila sunrise!

beautiful floral saucer - love these for candleholders too!

souvenir plate of Jackson Square, New Orleans - so you can try to remember Mardi Gras...

sweet milk glass plate with red roses

Magnolia Pearl-inspired vintage fabric covered saucer

perhaps the Holy Grail of kitsch - a Graceland souvenir plate

We have a whole section of souvenir plates in our shop called "on the road again".  I know I should quit buying them but I can't help it...their tackiness calls to me!

So, in case you're wondering about the cost of achieving all this fabulousness in your very own home, check out this handy comparison -

yellow birds plate - Anthropologie - $498.

yellow bird plate - Babylon Sisters - $6.

Happy over-doing it! xoxo
