I just read the most exciting article in Vanity Fair about an eyeglass company called Warby Parker. It was started by two guys who couldn't understand why eyeglasses cost so much (hello, my $800 a shot for 'progressives').
They found that there were only a few companies making glasses so they decided to make their own and sell frames for $95. AND
when you buy a pair they will give a pair to one of the billion people who don't have access to glasses.
They do have some showrooms scattered across the country but the main business is on line.
I don't think that would be a problem at all though because the web-site is great, the styles are stylish, and you can try up to five pairs at home before you decide.
an idea whose time has come...love it!
