Treasures from Throwaways

I just adore things made from other things.  Recycling, upcycling, altered art and couture - it's all wonderful if it keeps things out of the landfill!  I found this great book full of funky ideas - LOOK!

I usually find that when I'm looking at decorating books or magazines "Better Homes and Gardens" publications turn out to be my favorites.  This one is from 1976 but has ideas that I think could still be used today.

The first things that caught my eye were these Ham Can Lanterns.  Being vegetarian, I'm not sure if canned ham in this shape of can still exists but if it does these would be fun to make.  They definitely have a bold, modern look.

Ice-Cream Carton Lamps.  Brilliant!

I have seen these old lawn chairs at thrift stores with tattered fabric.  Wouldn't it be great to macrame a whole new look?

More furniture rescued with macrame.

Wheel Rim Stools.

Fantastic painted Victrola Teen Bar.

Amazing painted vintage typewriter.

The thrift stores have so many old neckties - this crazy quilt design wreath is lovely and old-fashioned.

Teeny little furniture made from tin cans - exquisite!

This book is full of tons more great ideas and listed at Babylon Scissors, our paper-themed Etsy shop.

A Fabulous Mess

Usually when I'm browsing through Etsy to find gorgeous things I find them here and there at various shops.  This shop, called "Fabulous Mess Vintage" is so totally THERE for me I had to show you - LOOK!

Beautiful boho maxi dress.

A Jimi Hendrix-worthy jacket and you know I don't say that lightly.  I may have mentioned (a lot) that he's my all-time favorite style icon!

Paisley print AND little mirrors - excellent!

Look at the beautiful colors and shape of this dress!

A real vintage carpetbag - love it.

Another flowy and fabulous hippie dress.

Love.

High fashion hippie!

And that's just the seventies - her eighties collection is equally fabulous.  Here's a sample -

I'm going to do another post with her awesome eightie's dresses as soon as I find my old Tears for Fears album to set the mood!

Aging Gracefully

My birthday is at the end of the month.  That makes me a Virgo...

Of course, I'm nothing like THAT...

The thing about aging for me is that most years I don't even know exactly how old I am.  I would have to check my driver's license and do the math.

To me stressing about aging or trying to resist it in some way is about as futile as going to the beach and resisting the tide coming in.

I admire people who choose to age gracefully.

Lots of people get even cooler as they age.

Jane Fonda always looks so elegant and age appropriate.

Of course it's also wonderful not to be elegant or appropriate.

Helen Mirren was born in 1945.  There are no excuses.

So let's celebrate aging...

Cheers!

Gypsy Curtains

These are my latest gypsy curtains for sale in my Etsy shop.  They're called La Gitana (gypsy in Spanish) because I think the colors give them a Spanish look.

They're actually made from a re-purposed sari from India and some black sheers from Ikea so they're really quite international.

These curtains are actually perfect in my kitchen window.  I would keep them but my kitchen only has one window so I really don't want to cover it.

This is one of the pictures I took outside.  It's really hard to get photos to really show the curtains I make because they have so many layers and details.  I tried to keep these somewhat simple by only adding some ribbons and bells instead of hours of insane hand beading, etc. like some of my other crazy creations.

I added this photo to the listing to show what the fabrics really look like.  One person "favorited" them as soon as I listed them so we'll see...
